Trovillion’s prose is vivid, her equine setting authentic.” Sasscer Hill, award-winning author of the Fia McKee racing mystery seriesBook False Gods: The Show Jumper's Challenge (Maryland Equestrian Series Book 1) Review :
This is the first L.R. Trovillion book I've read and it certainly won't be the last. I absolutely loved this story about Cory, the challenges of her family, the twists and turns of being a teen, and of course the horsy aspects of this lengthy, enjoyable and well-written story. I was flicking through the pages on my Kindle so quickly the woman beside me on the plane even commented I must be enjoying the story :)While I was never - and will never - be a brave showjumper, I could relate to so much of Cory's story, the fear of failing so great that you don't even try. The complexities of the adults around her were beautifully handled - you only ever saw Cory's view of those adult issues which made the story all the more authentic to me - very much a teen trying to navigate the troubled waters of growing up.I also enjoyed the fact that not every single scene was played out to the bitter end. Sometimes you were left wondering: what did happen there? Maybe X or Y happened. They weren't vital story points, but added an air of mystery and light-handedness to the story that I found refreshing and most welcome.I reckon I'll read this one again soon. But first, on with Horse Gods, Regina's story! This story is a teenage adventure, but is also a quietly inspiring read for all ages. Cory Iverson faces familiar issues in school related to acceptance and navigating her way through the social and romantic challenges that face all of us, but are particularly acute for teenagers. More troubling, she is trying to navigate them as she tries to understand and deal with the changes in her family life due to divorce and relocation. Ms. Trovillion does a wonderful job of making the reader feel like this is a personal journey with Cory as she begins to recognize that, as she is struggling, so are her mother and sister as they cope in their own ways with the same changes that have upended Cory's life.Cory has identified herself as a quitter, but she has an inner strength that I could see as the reader, but she only begins to see as she works her way through some ugly, but unfortunately all too common episodes that can beset a young woman. The backdrop of Cory's personal journey becomes the a local training barn with solid characters, true to the often complex, quirky, and interesting people that are found in all walks of equestrian life. Cory is ultimately aided by her re-connection with the horses in this world and the good and bad human characters it contains. Cory is a talented rider, so much so, even she can't deny it and the recognition of her skill by a tough but kind trainer leads her to begin to dream again. As she works to make that dream come true she is confronted with a moral dilemma against the glittering backdrop of the horse show world and she ultimately has to make hard decisions about what is really important. What sets this novel apart for me was the clarity and sophistication of the characters from this first-time author. The reader enters the story easily and is caught up in the flow of emotion as well as the plot itself. You may have read a thousand "girl meets horse"stories, but this quiet gem is more than that. There is an authenticity that is refreshing and I look forward to more adventures from Ms. Trovillion!
