I kept wondering as I read this, "Where on earth did these people get this information?" The book is heavily skewed Christian, and if you are of a Pagan orientation, much of the content is going to seem bordering on bizarre. I think I should have stopped reading when they told the story of the wild mare that, after hours of meditation with one of the authors, transmitted the word "communion" to her. The author immediately interpreted this as "we needed to go back to church."Hard, screeching stop.What about "communion" with nature, the planet, the Goddes... there's zero mention of the Goddess — a well-known entity to Pagan communities.There were a few gems of information here and there, but having spotted so many errors and slants, I feel compelled to seek out information that corroborates the statements and information in this book.Bottom line, if you are coming from a Pagan orientation... take a pass on this book. I did love this book on the first read and was so caught up in the way it described their love of horses that I researched where they were located. I understood from a website I found through the book, that they conducted seminars on their ranch. One of the gatherings was described as examining the mystical/spiritual connection between horse and rider. It looked so interesting that I decided to attend. Over a period of two days in a "spiritual" retreat I attended at their private ranch, I found 2 people who seemed deeply steeped in the bloodsport of bullfighting. They had a very detached view of humanity that I found totally opposite of anything I understand as spiritual or mystical. As an example, when we ate lunch, there was large artwork over the buffet table of a cock fight. It was quite disturbing to me and the first hint of where their beliefs would take us.The professional backgrounds of the author and her daughter, who led the group seminar, dealt with severely psychotic types of patients. It seemed to have desensitized them to normal people and for what most of us spiritual seekers understand as spirituality. As a result, many of our group left feeling like the horses were beautiful, but the people were strangely promoting their seminars in completely the wrong category. They were using their gifts of horsemanship to further the sport that tortures for entertainment . . . bullfighting. This was NOT a spiritual/mystical retreat. It seemed to be a vehicle that fed their PhD egos but not their horses. One that was brought out accidentally, needed to be removed by the SPCA it was so starved.During the last half of the last day, they began to defend their love for the ring. When I understood this, I almost stopped breathing at one point. I cannot remember ever leaving someplace with such a need to shake the dust off my feet and move on. Read the book and you run the risk of supporting efforts to resurrect a terrible sport that is outlawed in many parts of the world now, but for whom this group glorifies as noble.Personally, I prefer autistic children and those who are disabled on the backs of horses, not those looking for blood. We are NOT in the dark ages anymore!There are much better spiritual books through, I would look for them. Such as:Zen Mind Zen Horse, Spirituality Through HorsesTao of Equus.
